From Sketch to Carbon Fibre: A Custom Seating Case Study
This case study follows one custom seat from first sketch to finished carbon fibre part.
Before i3D Mobility made wheelchairs, we engineered custom sit-ski seats for two Australian athletes, with support from UNSW. Each athlete needed a seat that held their body securely, transferred every movement to the ski and stayed comfortable for hours on the snow. No off-the-shelf seat did that, so we built one around each person.
What we learned
A body mould captures details that a tape measure misses. Scanning the mould lets us design straight from the athlete's real shape instead of standard sizes. Carbon fibre gives a stiff, strong, light shell that holds that shape. Testing with the person in the seat matters more than any drawing.
Where it led
This project became the base of our wheelchair platform. The same mould, scan, CAD and carbon process now shapes our Custom Carbon wheelchair. Watch the Custom Carbon video to see it in a chair.
